How to pick your next travel destination

March 10, 2016

When it comes to planning your next holiday, a lot of variables come into the choice of destination.

Obviously, you need to know how much money you want or are able to spend on your holidays and how long you can go for. But there is so much more than can affect your choices and that you need to consider when picking your next holiday destination.

To make this process smoother and help you narrow down your options, here's a list of a few things you might want to think about:

1. The weather

First and foremost, you will need to consider the time of the year that it will be when you travel, as that will obviously affect the weather. This links in with the next point.

2. The type of vacation you want

When picking a place to travel to, you have to look at the type of experience you intend to have. Do you want to get away from the winter and go to a warm, tropical place and go to the beach? Or do you want a snow trip? Do you want to visit a city where you can do lots of tourism (cultural, sightseeing, etc.)? Or are you going on a more adventurous trip, maybe even practising a certain sport?

Then, of course, this is also related to the weather and time of year in those places. If you want to go to the beach, you need to pick a place where it's summer or at least a nice enough temperature to go to the beach; you might also want to check the water temperatures in those places. And if you want to go on a snow trip, you need to make sure it's winter and snowing on that particular place you want to go to.

These are all things you need to consider in order to narrow down the geographic areas where you can go.

3. Budget

Your budget will dictate how far you can go, as places further away usually cost more (at least, when it comes to plane tickets).
However, there are also some places that are very exclusive or very high-budget (even though they might not be far away), which you might not be able to go to, so you need to consider that as well.
If you're going to a country where you need a visa, this will be an added cost so, even though it might not be that relevant between the full price of the trip, it might be something to think about.

4. The number of vacation days

If you have very few days to travel, you might be better off choosing a closer destination because you will avoid spending too much time travelling back and forth, instead of actually using up most of your time to relax and visit everything. Places where you might have to catch connecting flights should also be avoided if you don't have a lot of time for your trip.

Also, you might want to leave the shorter holidays for places where you don't have that much to visit, but that you still want to go to, and use the longer holidays for places where you need at least a week to be able to visit all the must-see spots!

5. Language barriers

Language barriers might be an aspect to consider if you're going to a country where not a lot of people speak English or a language you're comfortable with, because it might make things a little more difficult for you. However, in these places, you might consider getting a tour guide which will help with that.

6. Health-related situations

If there is currently an epidemic in a certain place, you might want to avoid travelling there. Risking it just might ruin your holidays - it's preferrable to just leave that trip for later on.
Then, there's also places where you might need to go get vaccines - if you don't have a lot of time until your trip and the vaccine needs to be taken a few days before you go, this might pose an obstacle.

You should also consider if you want to go to places where there are food and/or water restrictions. This isn't a big obstacle but it's important to consider if you do go - in that case, you should read up on the subject, avoid eating any of those things and take precautions (medicine, water bottles, etc.).

These are just the main things that may influence your decision of the location you're planning to travel to. Are there any other aspects you usually consider when picking your next holiday destination?

Wishing you great travels!
